Price here is a calendar problem, not a car problem

In a capital city the cheap car is cheap all year. On a coast with a fourteen week season it is not. The same Skoda Fabia is the bargain of the list in May and unavailable in August, and no amount of filtering changes that. So the order of decisions matters more here than the decisions themselves.

  1. Fix the dates before the car

Moving a week either side of peak does more for the total than any choice of model. The fleet is fixed at around five hundred cars and the demand is not, so the cheap end is simply gone at the top of the season rather than more expensive.

  2. Then decide how many days you actually need it

A lot of visitors here take a car for the whole stay and leave it parked for three days of it. Kotor and Budva are walkable and connected by bus. Renting for the middle of the week is the single biggest saving most people never make.

  3. Then read the mileage, not the rate

481 of the 500 cars here have no cap, which makes the 19 that do the ones to notice. A capped car looks cheapest until Lovcen and Perast and a run to the Durmitor road put 400 km on it in three days.

  4. Only then pick the car

112 cars sit under 50 EUR a day, the cheapest at 28 EUR, and the median of that band is 45 EUR. Within it the differences are age and gearbox rather than anything that changes your week.

Which savings survive contact with the road

Book while the reservation is free to cancel. 179 of the cars here are, so an early booking costs nothing and holds the price against a market that only tightens.

Take the smaller car. Not to save the fifteen euros, but because the old town car parks and the serpentine both punish width. Here the cheap choice and the right choice are the same one.

Compare the total, not the day rate. An out of hours handover fee or a one way drop can move the number more than the class does.

Waiting for a late deal. This is a supplier market with a fixed fleet, not an airline. Prices rise into a date here; they do not collapse the week before.

Skipping the second driver. A few euros a day against sharing the hairpins above Kotor and the drive back from Budva after dinner. An unnamed driver also voids the cover.

Chasing the very cheapest listing. It is usually the oldest car, and a newer one is two or three euros more. 152 of the fleet are described as new vehicles.

May, June, late September. The cheap band is fully stocked and the coast road moves. This is when 28 EUR a day is a real option rather than a headline.

July and August. The bottom of every class sells out first. What remains is mid range, and the roads are at their slowest exactly when you have paid most.

Winter. Cheapest of all and the bay is beautiful empty, but some of what you would drive for is closed. The Lovcen road in particular is not a winter certainty.

Why the cheap end here is genuinely cheap

Montenegro is a small market with a lot of small operators, and none of them is funding an airport counter or a global brand. A fleet of forty cars run by people who live twenty minutes away has a different cost base than a franchise, and 28 EUR a day is simply what a well-kept compact is worth to that business in June.

The spread is narrow too, which is unusual. The whole fleet runs from 28 EUR to a median of 60, and even the premium band starts at 50. There is no executive tier here inflating the top, because nobody flies into a one-runway airport for a chauffeured week. That compression is why the gap between the cheapest sensible car and the nicest one is smaller than you would expect.

What you are trading is scale. Terms vary between suppliers rather than being set centrally, so the fuel policy and the excess are worth reading on each listing rather than assumed once. Everything relevant is on the card before you book.

Cheap hire, straight answers

It is the real daily rate of the cheapest car on the list for the dates shown, and it is what you pay per day. It excludes fuel, any extra driver and anything added at the handover. Nothing is charged by this site and there is no booking fee.

Late autumn through early spring, and then the shoulder weeks of May and late September if you want the coast at its best. The difference between a June booking and an August one for the same car is larger here than the difference between two classes.

Not reliably. Deposit, excess and mileage are set per supplier rather than per price band, so a 30 EUR car from a careful operator can have better terms than a 55 EUR one. That is exactly why they are printed on every listing.

A small one, paid at the barrier, and only if you head west. Most people cross it two or three times in a week. It is cheap enough that the twenty five kilometres it saves are worth more than the fare.

Here you pay the supplier at the handover, which is one of the reasons cancellation is straightforward on most of these cars. No money passes through this site at any point.
